Austrians are very friendly. It’s surprising how little German you need to function. When you go out for dinner, it is customary to leave a small tip. Don't leave 15%! Before you start drinking (usually just alcoholic drinks) you say "Prost" ("cheers"), glasses clicking. That's not enough! ALWAYS look into each other's eyes when saying "Prost"! It's very impolite in Austria when not doing so.
Temperatures depend largely on altitude, with averages 5C lower for each additional 300m of elevation. The long-term average maximum and minimum temperatures of Salzburg (435 m) are 1/-5C in January, 15/5C in April, 25/15C in July, 14/5C in October. Summers can be hot, with temperatures occasionally reaching 37C, summer evenings are usually cool. April and November the wettest periods
