Most Brazilians students who can afford it, learn all of their English in private schools. Native speakers usually work with young adults at a fairly advanced level while their Brazilian colleagues take the younger classes and the lower levels. Students often start to attend private schools when they are 9 or 10 and will attend year in year out until they become proficient users of English. Schools mainly use American language books.
Students are often forced to attend because their parents know how important English is in the Brazilian workplace, but these students are rarely disruptive. In Brazil exams are very important even in private language schools. So working closely with the syllabus is essential, for success in the end of term exams. The certificate that a student gets for passing is all-important. Students who do not pass exams must repeat a term which, of course, costs money. Therefore, unlike many language schools in the world, results day is a major event.
