Teaching English in Buenos Aires

The Living

Buenos Aires is a shopping paradise, for all tastes. Food is cheap and dominated by meat – beef in particular. Pasta is surprisingly popular, as are other European style foods. Beer is easily available, and Argentinian wines are now making their mark on the international stage. Eating out is inexpensive and increasingly varied, including Chinese and vegetarian restaurants.

Although US Dollars are generally taken everywhere, foreign currencies can be exchanged in banks and authorized bureaus. American Express, VISA, Diners and Master Card are widely accepted
Banks and Exchange Bureaus: Mondays to Fridays from 10.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.
Business Offices: generally from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. and from 2.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.
Stores: in the big cities from 9.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m., although in the outskirts and the provinces they generally close at midday. Saturdays, from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.
Cafés, cake shops and pizzerias: open most of the time except between 2.00 and 6.00 a.m.
Restaurants: lunch is served as from 12.30 p.m. and dinner as from 8.30 hours.
Fast-food menus are served in many restaurants at all times.

The Teaching

Argentina has done well in developing a large TEFL tradition over the last few years. The recent economic problems have now started to stabilize, and this teaching market is recovering well.
Business English is in big demand, particularly in Buenos Aires. Here thousands of companies provide English lessons for their employees. Business teaching is often in-house, so the teachers need to travel from company to company. American-English is sometimes preferred, though opportunities exist for qualified teachers from any native English-speaking background. International language school chains have also arrived in Argentina, such as the Wall Street Institute and Inlingua..
The number of hours of teaching a week on average are 10 - 20. You can teach all levels and ages in Argentina from business women to orphans.
Due to the economical situation, it is difficult for many students to buy English books or to get them from a public library. You will need to give them challenging activities: using authentic materials, like English newspapers, magazines, brochures, ads, etc. Children are growing up in a country full of problems, and they question why they have to learn English or why they have to study. Originality and enthusiasm are definitely needed to make a connection.
