Now
is the time for EFL teachers to go to Croatia there are more
language schools opening every month. It’s now over 12 years since
the war came to an end, and the pedagogical landscape is slowly beginning
to change. Plans are being developed to introduce ‘English across
the Curriculum’ in state schools, where subjects such as physics
or maths will be partly taught in English. While this is good news for
the schoolchildren of Croatia, the likely outcome for the average native
English speaker may well be less positive, as demand for general English
teaching dwindles. As it does so, English language teaching will have
to become even more specialized, which in turn will demand more specialized
knowledge from English teachers who wish to work here. Possibly having
to leave the country to pursue further training, as opportunities for
training in Croatia are slim.
The country had been plunged into economic and political depression and
its people were faced with only one way out: to invest in themselves.
For many, this meant learning or improving their English, the language
of commerce and tourism. And Croatia is a stunning place to visit. One
to one teaching is often the practice in Croatia
Croatia is the country of lavender they grow most of the lavender in Europe and when you walk by the fields you will feel very relaxed.
As Croatia strives to establish itself again in the world at large, Business English is of prime importance. One-to-one Business English lessons are very common, and the intensity they produce need some getting used to. Be prepared for cancellations, changes in time and the always loved “why” grammar questions!
There are
not many public toilets in Croatia even in touristy places. If
you find one, expect to have to pay a small fee. So, always carry some
small change on you. You can always find public toilets in the train stations,
in bus and petrol stations, in bigger supermarkets.
Croatians are very warm and hospitable. There are many cultural activities,
especially in the summer, for tourists.
WATER: Tap water is potable throughout Croatia.
TELEPHONES: the code for Croatia is +385.
TRAVEL documentation: Passport or some other internationally recognised
identification document. Tourists may remain in Croatia for up to three
months.
MEDICAL care: Medical assistance is available in hospitals providing a
24-hour emergency service.
NATIONAL holidays: 1 January - New Year's Day; 6 January – Epiphany;
Easter Sunday and Easter Monday; 1 May - International Labour Day; 30
May - Independence Day; 22 June - Antifascist Day; 5 August - Homeland
Thanksgiving Day; 15 August – Assumption; 1 November - All Saints'
Day; 25 and 26 December - Christmas Holidays.
WORKING hours: Shops and department stores are open between 8 a.m. and
8 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., or to 3 p.m. Banking hours
are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays banks are open
until 1 p.m.
