in Korea, I
found the perfect job for me in South Korea, by contacting schools
myself. I knew what I wanted from a school, to teach children ages 8-16,
I knew where I wanted to live. I'd heard about all the normal contract
offerings from recruiters constantly contacting me. I wasn’t sure
if could trust them. I had a friend that had taught in South Korea and
she had told me that as soon as she had signed her contract with the school,
she couldn’t get in touch with her recruiter ever again!! This is
why I thought I’d do it myself. At least my way I understood everything
before I arrived. I’m working in Seoul right in the centre; I have
been here 5 months. I sorted a 6 month contract out with the choice of
renewing for another 6 months; I am going to extend my contract because
my director is very good to me and I’m very happy with the school.
I have a TEFL and Degree in English but you can work here with just a
Degree in any subject. I chose South Korea because it’s a good way
to save money for the future after 1 year working here I can put a deposit
on a flat back in England. I earn 2.100.000 South Korean Won a month.
The school offers me my own apartment with all mod cons and I get the
school bus to work which takes 10 minutes.
Every month the director takes all the staff out for Korean food Kalbi,
(it’s like bbq meat, with about 10 side dishes very yummy). At my
school there are 8 Korean teachers and 4 foreign teachers from New Zealand
and Canada. We all hangout at the weekends. I work 25 hours a week Monday
– Friday.
There is a place called itaewon where lots of foreigners go on the weekends
to party. Hyehwa is a great place to go to party this is a more Korean
university area with lots of cool bars and places to eat. Coex is the
best the best place to go shopping along with Dongdemun market. Here is

You get a free plane ticket, a free apartment, a very high wage
and very low tax (4%). The cost of living is reasonable, and
can be very low if you want it to be. You can have a lot of disposable
cash, or as many do, send that cash home to pay off your debts. Unless
you do kindergarten, you can get up late, and go to work after lunch.
Or get up early and do lots of things for yourself before you go to school.
You should be finished no later than 9pm – and then the night is

Two things are truly great about Korea: Soju & Kalbi. Soju is the local firewater, only 40 pence (60 cents) a bottle, it will change your life and your head! Kalbi is a traditional way of eating marinated pork/beef, barbecuing it yourself on your own personal burning coals and grill, then eating wrapped in lettuce with garlic & hot bean paste (best done outside on plastic chairs!)
"Teaching in Korea is like baby sitting in another country at warp speed! 12 + kids in a class that have all to learn and finish the English book within the month! Easy cash as you don’t have to use your brain power. The reason they ask for a photo is that they want to see your white face and colored eyes with light hair. They don’t care if you have taught before or whether you have any teaching certificates, although this is changing and some schools now are asking for teachers with TEFL, CELTAs and offering such teachers higher pay anything from 2.2 mill won - 2.8 mil won per month.
It's what you look like that counts in this country, the prettier and skinner the better for the school, as image is the one big thing over here. Koreans are very vain people. Because after all even though you may not know it yet, you are the major sales pitch for the school the face that will go on flyers, posters and their websites.
