Teach English in New Zealand Are you looking for clean air, clear skies, beaches, mountains and the great outdoors and all the advantages of city living—cafes, theatre, music and more? Find English teaching work fast…..by using our e-directory of schools all over New Zealand it’s that simple…. Most local new Zealanders are wanting to work in Asia to pay of debts. So they leave a hole in the market for TEFL teachers in their own country, estimated New Zealand teachers in South Korea 2008 is over 72%. Due to places like South Korea and China most kiwis are moving there for over 2-6 yrs to save cash, for when they move back home. Teaching in new Zealand in often a low wage but as it’s cheap to live there it all equals out in the end. NZ$25,000 - $47,000 per year (NZ$25-$40 per hour max teaching hours is 26 hours a week. Feb-March and July-October are the busiest periods. New Zealand has a well structured ESL/EFL industry, with reasonable salaries and working conditions for teachers. The fact that it is also part of the Working Holiday program with the UK, Australia, Ireland and Canada has meant that nationals of these countries who are under 30 years of age are normally eligible to work here. Australians do not need a Work visa for New Zealand. Think of New Zealand and images of a clean, green paradise pop into your head. My opinion is kind of biased I admit, but we have some of the most fabulous scenery you’ll ever see: beautiful clean beaches, mountain ranges, native bush and impressive geothermal areas. There are places where you can get out of your car, walk down a track for 5 minutes & find a natural geothermal creek running by, just waiting for you to jump on in for a warm swim. The country has countless quiet little beaches where you can be guaranteed to not see another soul, fantastic places to go hiking, an endless supply of adventure sports including bungy jumping, white water rafting, black water rafting & luge – the possibilities for your weekends are just endless!! Along with all these natural attractions NZ has a booming café culture, our home grown theatre is just getting better & better, and the music industry is on fire!! All these enticing reasons to come to NZ, and here’s another! Teaching
in Primary/Secondary Schools Secondary is a different story. This year many schools started term one with a severe teacher shortage, especially in the areas of maths, physics, chemistry, English, information and communications technology, and technology. The shortage is not going to get better in the near future, with rolls expected to peak around 2007 which coincides with when many teachers are expected to retire. Your teaching experience & life experience are valuable, our secondary schools are always thrilled to utilise skilled staff. To teach in a NZ primary or secondary school, you need to have a recognised qualification in teaching. This can either be a 3 or 4 year teaching degree, or a bachelor’s degree in your chosen subject with a 1 year diploma in teaching. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority will want to check out your degree & make sure that it is inline with the requirements to teach over here. Visa wise, overseas teachers can live in NZ for up to three years on a work permit. For more information on work visa issues, check out the immigration department website www.immigration.govt.nz . Teachers salaries in NZ are not what we deserve (they never are!!), but are definitely enough to live comfortably on. A first year teacher receives a salary of $36 260 NZD, and this rate goes up based on how long you’ve been teaching for. Teaching
English as a Second Language There are more & more private language schools appearing every year, and there is always the opportunity to take private students – as many are really keen to take extra classes to improve their English further! The pay rate in Queenstown is currently around $18 per hour – you aren’t going to get rich, as most schools only operate for 25 hours per week, but it’s a great experience ? Overall, New Zealand is a place I’d really recommend if you’re looking at an overseas teaching experience. Whether it is school teaching you’re looking at or ESOL, the NZ lifestyle will agree with you no matter what walk of life you come from. And just think… come the summer holidays you can get your togs on , head down to the bach for a week & spend your days chilling out on our gorgeous beaches!! See you soon! (togs = bathing suit, bach = beach house!! ha ha ha. welcome to the world of kiwi English!!) By Kat (New Zealand) Once
