I taught in Spain
for 1 year and I am moving back there next year to teach. Reading &
writing is seen as the priority in ELT schools, because Spanish schools
do not test their students orally at any time during their education (until
that is you take an English degree at university ). It is common to find
students who are unable to speak any English despite finishing higher
education and achieving good grades in English exams. These students are
unable to make any connection between the written and spoken word and
they often return to academies once they realise that they need to be
able to speak English for their work.
Teaching in Spain was at first very hard as at my old school it was mainly
teaching one to one. This is the most popular way to teach in Spain as
the Spanish are quiet, can you believe this? But they are shy and don’t
like to be in groups when studying English.
They used a macro media computer program when I taught there, which basically
means they study the grammar and writing on the computer, and just sign
up for 30 min conversation sessions with the native speaker, great if
you are a talker. But after awhile you become one ….you have too!
I worked from 10 am to 1pm with the siesta for 2 hours then back to work
at 4.30pm to about 9.30pm 10ish.
I was always booked up on the night and never got away early! But straight
to the local for a few drinks and tapas and to meet the other teachers
in the area. I taught in Toledo it's great place to party by the way,
It’s a uni town what more can I say.
I shared my apartment with 3 others, my lodgings were found by my school
directors; it had a swimming pool and an amazing countryside view and
it was a massive flat. It was a bit dated on the décor but we added
our small touches.
All this for about $50 a month each.
Bills? Well in summer it gets far too hot to cope with, so we had the
air con on all the time, which cost about $10 each a month.

It's not
"impossible" to get work papers for a non EU citizen.
This means that if you try Madrid, Barcelona or any other large city you
will have problems - this is where most people go wrong. Smaller cities
and towns are easier bets for you to find employment.
Your only problem once you get the papers is that at least for the first
year or so you are restricted to working only for that employer. So if
you see this really well paid job elsewhere, your permit "A"
will not be valid. An important thing to note is that you will undoubtably
get a short term contract, which mean no summer pay and reduced social
security contributions – anything other than this is very rare.
But this is true in almost all European countries.
After a few years you get a "B" which allows you to change employer,
but not type of job.
Finally you get a "C" (after 6 years or so) which is great as
it allows you freedom of job and employer. Gettting a permit is not impossible,
but as some one has said before, time consuming and very very very bureaucratic.
There must be easier ways of making a living!
Good advice is to go to the big cities like Madrid and Barcelona to find
your first job, and then go to less touristy places in Northern Spain
and on the west coast to find your better job with a better contract.
Be enthusiastic about the profession when you go for an interview dress
smartly. Also, sad but true, many employers hire applicants based on their
looks (to motivate students, possibly?), so take extra care with your

Lifestyle
Shopping Drinks, cigarettes, fares, hostels, cinemas, utilities are all
cheaper than in the UK, America Canada and Australia. Other goods (clothes,
records, electrical, photographic goods) are similarly-priced to all the
countries above. English newspapers are about 2-3€ and magazines
are from 3€ - 6 euros. Accommodation in the larger cities is expensive,
one-person flats are rare. As a result, the majority of teachers share
with either Spanish people or colleagues. Expect to pay around 200€
to 300€ a month for a share in a flat in a major city, although in
smaller towns you are likely to find flat shares for better value. The
majority of flats are furnished but may not have household equipment.
To find cheap accommodation on the coast forget it in the summer months
you can expect to pay anything from 800€ + for an apartment, Especially
on the costa del sol Marbella town is the most expensive location in Spain
to live.
Fresh food is one of the delights of living in Spain and you can eat cheaply
cooking at home. Fruit and vegetables, bread, wines, meat and fish are
all of a very high standard. Other products can be bought at local shops/supermarkets
or at one of the several hyper-markets on the outskirts of town. Dairy
products are more expensive than in the U.K. Eating times are rather different
from Britain - lunch is usually served from 1.30 p.m. until around 3.30
p.m. and it is not normal to begin dinner before 9.30 p.m. Most restaurants
offer a set lunch ranging from 6€. to 11€. . for a three course
meal including wine, mineral water or beer. Evening meals are a la carte
and the prices vary enormously.

European Union
Citizens:
The legal requirements for EU citizens intending to reside in Spain are
as follows:
EU citizens no longer need either a visa or work permit to establish themselves
in Spain. They are allowed to remain for six months, by the end of which
time they should be in possession of a residence card, (Residencia). Obtaining
a residence permit in Spain, you must either have a job, or have proof
of sufficient funds to support yourselves and your family. A fiscal number
also needs to be applied for, but this is a mere formality, as, in the
case of foreign residents, the numbers are identical.
Non-European
Union Citizens:
Non-EU citizens, planning to live in Spain, need to apply for a work and
residence permit (the worker), or a residence permit only (non-workers
or dependants).
Citizens from the United States, and most South American countries, are allowed to visit Spain, as tourists, without any permit or visa, for a maximum of 90 days out of 180. Most other countries will require a tourist visa (please contact Relocations España for further details).
Work and Residence
Permit:
Obtaining a residence permit in Spain to work, (Residencia) the employing
company in Spain must first process the application, on behalf of the
employee, in Spain. Once the authorities in Madrid have stamped the official
job offer, this is then passed to the employee in the country of origin,
or last legal residence, so that the visa application can be processed
at the nearest Spanish Consulate. When the work permit is granted, the
authorities notify the hiring company in Spain, as well as the Spanish
Consulate where the visa has been applied for, and the employee can return
to the consulate to collect the visa. The employee may now legally reside
and work in Spain, even though the process is not yet complete: it may
take a few more months and two trips to the police station before the
final work and residence cards are obtained
Spain has a double taxation agreement with many countries. You are liable
for income taxes when you reside 183 days per calendar year in Spain,
or if you have your main business interest in Spain. In some cases paying
for Permits and Taxes in Spain may be advantageous since there are deductions
that may not apply in other countries.
In general, the double taxation agreement allows you a tax credit in the US for taxes paid in Spain and visa versa. It is important to distinguish yourself as a resident or non-resident. As a non resident you are only taxed on income derived in Spain. As a resident of Spain you will be taxed on your world wide income.When leaving Spain you need to apply for tax clearance, You will need to pay an estimated amount of taxes due for that year. If that amount turns out to be too high, you can request a refund.
Health care
in Spain
You can either get a EU Health card from the post office in the U.K this
only covers you for short stay holiday periods. If you are planning on
working in Spain you can apply for free health care. For this you need
to get your social security number from any social security office in
your local area, all you need to take is your passport. This card you
can take to your local doctors to prove you are paying your social security
and therefore they offer you free health care. But I may add all dentists
in Spain are private, and not free. But you can expect to pay from 17
euros - 40 euros for a check up.
Transport
Airports: in There are several international Airports
in Spain, the most important being Madrid Barajas Airport, from where
it is possible to arrive at the city in taxi, bus or subway. Other cities
with international airports are: Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga, Seville
and Alicante.
Airplane: The Spanish flag airline is Iberia, that covers the international and domestic destinies. The great majority of international companies has flights to the most important centres of Spain. Other companies that take care of the cabotage destinies are Spanair and Air Europe.
Buses: The local bus services in cities run from around 0600 until between 22:00 and midnight, when a more expensive night system comes into operation. Most buses don't have a lot of seats, opting instead for maximum standing room. Urban buses are quite slow although some major cities provide dedicated bus lanes. Most towns have a bus terminal. Keep in mind that when waiting at a bus stop, the bus may not always stop for you unless you indicate you wish it to.
Cars: Spain has a roads network of more than 150,000 kms. The freeways are well maintained and cross the country from north to south, someone’s requires a toll in pesetas. The allowed speed limit are of 130 km/h in the freeways, 90 km/h in other roads, and descends to 50 km/h in populated areas. It is obligatory to have the driving licence in use and is recommendable to contract an insurance.
Metro: There are metro lines in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. They offer the fastest way to get around these cities and are unsurprisingly crowded during rush hours. Special tickets are available including a cheap day return, a metrocard allowing three / five days unlimited use, and weekly and monthly passes. A map (plano del metro) showing the lines in different colours can be obtained from ticket office.
Taxis: You should only use taxis that display a special licence. They are of a very high standard as they are governed by strict legislation. They display a green light when they are free (libre). They can be flagged down or found at a taxi rank and are metered but have a set price for certain journeys. Tipping is a customary 5-10%.
Train: The railway network is directed by the state company called Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles (RENFE) and connects all the regions of the peninsula. The trains usually have air conditioning and car restaurant. There are high speed trains (AVE) between Madrid and Seville and Madrid and Malaga. There are also a huge variety of local, short-distance trains called tranvía (also a tram). Suburban commuter trains (cercanías) are second class only and stop at all stations. Tourist trains exist, like the Transcantábrico and Expreso Andaluz, a good way to discover those regions. The Spanish railway service is one of the cheaper in Europe and has discounts like the Railway Tourist Card, that allows limitless trips between three and ten days in the period of two months. It’s also possible to use the European railway pass. The seats reservation is recommended for the interurban services.
Living in
spain
Comparing the cost of living in Spain to other European countries is a
difficult questions to answer. Prices can vary substantially depending
on the area, generally the cost of living is higher in urban centres such
as Madrid or Barcelona than in rural villages and towns.
During the 1970’s and 1980’s Spain was a very cheap place to live, but now Spain has caught up with the rest of Europe and as such the cost of living in Spain is comparable to the rest of Europe. Alcohol and tobacco are still almost half the price of other European countries and fresh fruit and vegetables are generally cheaper, as are meat, fish and poultry but clothes, shoes and electrical goods are slightly more expensive. The cost depends mostly on whether you buy imported or locally produced goods. Generally you should expect to budget for everyday living costs on the same basis as you would in the rest of Europe.
A general rule of thumb for many people, when calculating the cost of living in Spain is that, if it is going to cost you 150 euros a week to live in the UK, it will cost you around 100 euros a week to live in Spain. This rule obviously has its exceptions but if you use this rule across all your expenses you will find that it wont be too far out. Eating out can be extremely well priced and it is possible to have a "menu of the day" for as little as 6 or 7 euros for which you will get three courses including a bottle of wine and bread. It is often cheaper to eat out than it is to stay in! A good meal for two with wine, including tips and VAT is rarely more than 50 euros.
In the cities of Spain the price of property is high relative to the costs of living. Many Spaniards spend up to half their income on housing but on the other hand a cup of coffee or a glass of beer can be bought in a Spanish cafe for one Euro or less. As a consequence, many Spaniards in the big Spanish cities live in small apartments and observe a social life that centres around cafes and restaurants, rather than their homes.
Since the introduction of the Euro, there has been a perceived inflation of prices in Spain. With the conversion from Pesetas to Euros, most prices were rounded up to the nearest Euro equivalent.

There are a lot of native English teachers in Spain coming from the U.K that are over qualified with PGCE. If you have a CELTA or TEFL Trinity you can find work easily. If not you will end up in a school that’s not exactly the real deal, there are many schools on the Costa del sol that exploits the English teacher and this is why you can be sacked without warning.
Teachers hang on for dear life to keep their job on the costas, because like in other countries in the EU there isn’t a lot of work about. So maybe you are the teacher of the month, but next month you are not and there are about 50 new expats coming onto the Costa, every month with a CELTA, PGCE looking for the dream life of living in the sun. Fact most teachers end up doing bar/ cafe work for 3 euros an hour!!!
