I started teaching Sports 2 years ago. It began when I worked on a summer camp In the States. I’m American the summer camp was for 2 months. It was great fun. I was only 25 years old and most of the other teachers were my age. We had classes of 10-20 children and I worked about 2 hours a day and the rest of the time I helped look after the kids when they had to go on outings.
I’m now teaching Sports in Turkey and love it. The lifestyle here is so laid back and the people are great. My contract ends next summer and I’m planning on teaching in a summer camp again but in France this time. Schools can sponsor you for summer camps in Europe for 4-8 weeks and if they like you they will hire you full time so this is my plan. It’s the best thing to do to get teaching experience abroad. I have friends who are teaching in Asia but it’s too hot for me there!

Corkid asked me to write a piece about teaching Sports abroad. I have been teaching Tennis and Swimming in the U.K now for 5 years. I love it, I trained in New Zealand and as soon as I could I moved over to the U.K. My grandparents were from there, so I had a duel passport and thought I’d take advantage from it. I live in Leeds it’s a northern city, it is cheaper to live here than London and the people are really friendly.
I worked in London when I first arrived as I had many friends there doing the two year visa thing. But I decided to stay here. I would recommend to anyone thinking about working abroad JUST DO IT, you can always move back home if you don’t like it, life is short take a risk. I don’t think I’m going to move back to New Zealand until I’m retired, I love it!
