There
is still a significant demand for native-speaking English teachers in
Taiwan, particularly for teaching children. Private language schools (or
'Buhsibans'), which cram students for university entrance, were once the
norm, but things have changed. The Taiwanese are very friendly people.
The level of English in the shops and bars is high. If you’re a
man you’ll be happy to know that the women generally love foreign
men, but unfortunately for the Western women, their independent ways of
living and thinking usually scare off most Taiwanese men. But the major
draw of Taiwan is the fact that you can make a great deal of money.
Like any large TEFL market there are a lot of dodgy schools in Taiwan,
but there are also a lot of good ones too. It just takes time, patience,
intelligence and 'following your instincts' to find one.
If you don't have a degree, plan on a visa run every two months. Although
this is a hard way to save money. You will usually be set up with a nice
apartment which didn't cost you anything. Free lunch is sometimes provided
at schools, depending on your work hours. If you do not like the local
food, there is McDonalds, Pizza Hut's, all over the place. So, if you
do your homework regarding what school to teach at and what city you want
to live in, everything else should take care of itself
In Taipei itself, anyone with a love of shopping will be well catered for. Every brand name you can think of is widely available here. And for any lady that has taught in Asia before, and had to cope with the ridiculously small sizes of everything, Taiwan caters for normal western sized girls – and that includes bras that go above the Asian A Cup norm!
Taipei is a very comfortable city, not too big and easy to get around. It’s not cheap, about the same as the US. But for any Asian old-hands, it is a world away from other cities in terms of service and quality. The are a number of western style restaurants, but the difference is the food they serve is actually real western food…..not the usual tasteless imitation food you get in Korea or elsewhere. We went to a Spanish tapas place, and got served genuine tapas (fantastic!), with real quality Spanish wine! Then went to a pub serving real ale, and showing Premiership footie live on a big screen….heaven is a place called Taipei!
