With
this continually increasing demand to learn English with native English
speakers, English teaching has become the most popular choice of job for
those people who choose Thailand as their new home. Teaching English is
one of the few jobs you can actually do legally in Thailand. Nowdays there
are lots of teaching jobs around Thailand, teachers can pick and choose
a school where they would like to work.
Generally you need to be a qualified teacher with either a degree or TEFL
Certificate to work legally (i.e. get a work permit). But many people
have worked here with no formal qualifications and fake documents in the
past, the situation is now getting a lot stricter, but you can still buy
certificates down khao san road if you're looking!
There
are many EFL schools in Bangkok, in addition, there are also many smaller
private schools.
Many people arriving in Bangkok head to the bigger language schools where
the average pay is 30,000Bht a month. Big language schools don't tend
to have standards quite as high as some of the smaller schools and will
usually hire you whether you are qualified or unqualified, experienced
or inexperienced. The better schools, of which there are few, require
qualified teachers - with experience sometimes a requirement the pay there
is from 35-50,000 bht per month. International schools are schools that
offer tuition to foreign children living in Thailand or to Thai students
with very wealthy parents who want there children to get a superior education
to what the State run system offers. Teachers at these schools are almost
always non-Thai and the education at these schools is far better than
the questionable education that many get at a public Thai school. The
cost of fees is very expensive and the teachers are usually paid well
- at least equivalent to a Western salary but you must have a education
degree and lots of teaching experince with references. Universities often
have a handful of English teachers too; the pay is about 28,000bht for
English teachers.
To work at a university, one usually requires a degree plus a CELTA Certificate or equivalent.
I taught
English in Phuket, Thailand for 1 year and loved the people and the school.
I taught in the government schools, teaching English to the poor kids.
I had about 25 kids in a class with no assistant it was both challenging
and rewarding at the same time. My pay was 25,000 baht a month, I paid
3,000 baht a month rent and paying for food…. well you can eat off
the streets for less than 20bht, and get a drink included. Be prepared
to pay any thing from 6,000 Bht + for a apartment. You can allways share
with a friend to cut costs.
When locating to Thailand bring enough money to set up house you must pay 2 months deposit and a months rent in advance. Apartments are usually paid for at the end of the month, and not in advance (after the initial deposit). The average one room costs from 4,000 bht + in Bangkok. But at the lower end do not expect much other than a bed, maybe a TV with cable, and a fridge, but then you may have to rent those items on top. You could pay out 30,000 bht a month for a all you want apt, with dvd player, cleaner, full cable tv, swimming pool, gym, and a view to die for in Bangkok. Outside of Bangkok in the rural areas you can often find jobs offering free accommodation. Near to, or on the coast, expect to pay more as these are the tourist areas and whether you are a teacher and feel like a local you are to them a "Farang" a (Westerner) you will be charged tourist rate so don't expect to save in these areas. Even if you can speak some Thai you still will be charged like a "Farang"! Thai people are happy people and will help you if they can. Living in Thailand is a relaxing experience don't expect people to be on time, the food is great, the shopping is all you could want, the locals smile all day long and the beaches are excellent.
